I wanted to test BlogBackupOnline so I used it to backup my Windows Live Spaces blog and restored it to this LJ blog platform to see what it would look like on LJ.

Slap in the Facebook: It's Time for Social Networks to Open Up [Aug. 10th, 2007|02:11 pm]

Here's Wired Magazine trying to "take the high road" on social networking, BUT I'm afraid that social networking isn't going to evolve in this direction. After all, look at instant messaging and you'll see that AIM is still "holding out" so I don't expect either Facebook or MySpace to give up their stranglehold.

I put my lifestream on Plaxo's Pulse, BUT I STILL haven't figured out how to see others' Pulse data except for my friend Scott Wilder. However, I haven't asked him yet what he did to enable me to see his data. He's told me that he can see mine so I'll have to check out what I did to make that happen.

» The desktop OS will still matter, just not which one | The Universal Desktop | ZDNet.com [Aug. 10th, 2007|01:33 pm]

What are the implications of this for MOBILE applications? As a heavy user of a mobile device, I am constantly concerned about running out of RAM when installing an application that can't be installed on my storage card!

For that reason, I prefer browser-based Web SERVICES. After all, it really doesn't matter that a service requires Web access because any "useful" installed application would require Internet access anyway. It really doesn't matter to me IF there's some compromise to using a Web service instead of an installed app because that's a "price" that I would gladly pay in order to enjoy the convenience of mobility! In other words, in the world of mobility, a Web-based service is easier to justify than it would be in the desktop space.

Furthermore, a mobile operating system ought to "genuinely blend the Web and the mobile device" so I will be anxious to see IF this indeed happens. However, it isn't very likely to come from Symbian or Microsoft who are locked in a battle for mobile OS market share! Maybe, the iPhone will show us the way IF Apple follows a Web service strategy rather than locking us in to the Apple OS.

I have taken a special interest in lifestreaming:

so I'd be very happy IF FB would let my data OUT OF FB!

Plaxo's Pulse, an "open" social network? [Aug. 6th, 2007|01:51 pm]

Over the weekend, I "got wind" of Pulse so I finally got around to setting it up because I'm always "on the lookout" for the "ultimate" DLA (Digital Life Aggregator) In their haste to launch, they haven't YET set up an RSS feed (WHY would anyone "forget" to do that?), but it does show great promise because of its ability to let YOU control WHO sees your DLA stream.

However, Scoble thinks that it's "too little, too late" and NOT AS COOL as Facebook so we'll just have to wait and see IF he's right about that!

Wesabe [Aug. 4th, 2007|06:43 pm]

For the last several years, I have gotten a copy of Microsoft Money (FREE after rebate) with my income tax software, BUT I have NEVER "gotten around" to installing and using it!

Yesterday, I signed up for Wesabe and uploaded my credit cards. I was "motivated" by our family's recent "acquisition" of a puppy "Bruce" so I have programmed Wesabe to tag every purchase from Petco and PetSmart in order to track our pet expenses. We got this puppy for Tabby because she wants to be a vet so I'm looking for some return on my "investment" (just kidding!)

I just "discovered" ScribeFire so I'm testing it out.

IF it works, I STILL have to figure out why I can't get it to authenticate to Windows Live Spaces!

Did you know that dogs do "social networking" ? [Jul. 31st, 2007|04:53 pm]

Tabby doesn't realize that she's now "into" social networking since she created a profile for her new Beagle puppy Bruce:

Dog profile for Bruce, a male Beagle

For the time being, I hope that she'll be "content" to stay away from "human" social networking. I encouraged her to do this because she'll need to submit a journal of her animal-oriented activities if she applies for vet school someday.

Group WorkCamps "Week of Hope" [Jul. 24th, 2007|10:26 am]

Today is Faith, Hope, and Love "Urban Projects Day" in Indianapolis! There's a "Week of Hope" team here from Group WorkCamps. The team is led by Sydney, a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, from North Carolina. I'll be telling you more about the team later.

They're getting ready to make sandwiches for tonight's Vacation Bible School held by Greater Faith House of Prayer whose pastors are Joseph and Gail Reaves.

Here is a "geo-tag" for this story:

» EXCLUSIVE: That to-be-disconnected Sprint customer tells me all | IP Telephony, VoIP, Broadband | ZDNet.com [Jul. 19th, 2007|08:36 am]

By now, you've probably heard about Sprint's public relations "disaster" after it notified some subscribers that Sprint would be "dropping" them due to excessive calls to customer service. Whether or not you agree with Sprint's policy, this posting explains WHY some subscribers have to call so often: to FIX MISTAKES MADE BY THE PROVIDER!

Like myself, I'm sure that you can relate to her dilemma because not only have I had to call various companies with whom I do business to get them to fix THEIR mistakes, BUT I often find that I have to call many times in order to "find" the RIGHT person who can fix the mistake!

Can the iPhone do double duty as a laptop? - Wireless World - MSNBC.com [Jul. 18th, 2007|01:05 pm]

Those of us who have been using Windows Mobile, Pocket PC Edition have known the answer to this question for quite some time. With my HTC Wizard, I have done just fine without lugging around a laptop even though I ONLY have EDGE service from T-Mobile as the iPhone also does from AT&T. Furthermore, the Wizard has a "real" keyboard although I have no doubt that the iPhone beats Windows Mobile at "ease of use" so I am hoping that the iPhone "pushes" Microsoft to improve the usability of Windows Mobile!

Even when I was using a Palm Treo 600, I did quite well without a laptop, BUT I have found that the WiFi on the HTC Wizard makes a big difference, especially last month while I was in Singapore enjoying the extensive WiFi coverage of Wireless@SG!

I MIGHT STILL get a UMPC especially when its price point and capabilities make it a viable alternative!

I'm a "hero" [Jul. 6th, 2007|04:00 am]

At least to Tabby anyway

I just bought her a puppy ! I 've uploaded a photo to this entry.

So it looks like it's time to get her started on Dogster especially IF it has some mechanism for her to maintain a journal about her dog. She says that she wants to be a vet and the Purdue Vet School page asks applicants to submit a journal of their experiences with animals so it's the right time for Tabby to start her journal. IF Dogster doesn't "fit the bill" I guess that I'll introduce her to blogging, BUT I'm just NOT sure which one to recommend. Any suggestions?

P.S. His name will be "Bruce" and the breeder has already started to call him by his name.
