Here's Wired Magazine trying to "take the high road" on social networking, BUT I'm afraid that social networking isn't going to evolve in this direction. After all, look at instant messaging and you'll see that AIM is still "holding out" so I don't expect either Facebook or MySpace to give up their stranglehold. I put my lifestream on Plaxo's Pulse, BUT I STILL haven't figured out how to see others' Pulse data except for my friend Scott Wilder. However, I haven't asked him yet what he did to enable me to see his data. He's told me that he can see mine so I'll have to check out what I did to make that happen. What are the implications of this for MOBILE applications? As a heavy user of a mobile device, I am constantly concerned about running out of RAM when installing an application that can't be installed on my storage card! For that reason, I prefer browser-based Web SERVICES. After all, it really doesn't matter that a service requires Web access because any "useful" installed application would require Internet access anyway. It really doesn't matter to me IF there's some compromise to using a Web service instead of an installed app because that's a "price" that I would gladly pay in order to enjoy the convenience of mobility! In other words, in the world of mobility, a Web-based service is easier to justify than it would be in the desktop space. Furthermore, a mobile operating system ought to "genuinely blend the Web and the mobile device" so I will be anxious to see IF this indeed happens. However, it isn't very likely to come from Symbian or Microsoft who are locked in a battle for mobile OS market share! Maybe, the iPhone will show us the way IF Apple follows a Web service strategy rather than locking us in to the Apple OS. » The desktop OS will still matter, just not which one | The Universal Desktop | ZDNet.com |

For the last several years, I have gotten a copy of Microsoft Money (FREE after rebate) with my income tax software, BUT I have NEVER "gotten around" to installing and using it! Yesterday, I signed up for Wesabe and uploaded my credit cards. I was "motivated" by our family's recent "acquisition" of a puppy "Bruce" so I have programmed Wesabe to tag every purchase from Petco and PetSmart in order to track our pet expenses. We got this puppy for Tabby because she wants to be a vet so I'm looking for some return on my "investment" (just kidding!) Wheaties for Your Wallet |
